The band is a non‑contesting, sociable brass group that performs a wide selection of popular music. Established in 1942, it originally operated as a drum and bugle band before transitioning into a full brass band in the 1980s. Today, it remains the only brass band within St John Ambulance and brings together a mixed‑age group of musicians who value accessible music-making and a supportive rehearsal environment.
Rehearsals take place every Wednesday evening from 7.30pm to 9.30pm at the St John Ambulance HQ, Moor Street, Tamworth (B79 7QZ). Sessions are designed to be relaxed and sociable, with members meeting weekly to practise and prepare for occasional local performances.
The band is currently seeking additional players across several sections, including euphonium, baritone, cornet, trombone, and Eb/Bb bass. All abilities are welcome, including experienced musicians, returning players, and those looking to re-engage with brass banding in a friendly, non‑competitive setting.
Helen Kesterton, Network Lead for Burton and Tamworth Network, said “The Band is an asset and chance of fellowship in an organisation that is over 1000 years old. It is a remarkable opportunity for us for fundraising for our charity and to keep this long-standing tradition of a St John band in this area. They play in the community and at the St John ceremonial events over the country.”
Prospective members are invited to attend a Wednesday rehearsal to meet the group and observe or participate in a session. Those interested in joining can attend informally or make contact in advance to arrange a visit.
