The Sri Lankan New Year is more than a cultural celebration it is a time that brings communities together, strengthens identity and honours tradition.
That spirit was clearly evident on 2 May 2026, when around 1,500 people gathered at Pallet-Track Bescot Stadium, home of Walsall FC, for a vibrant and meaningful celebration in Walsall organized by Jethavana Buddhist Vihara Trust (Charity Number: 108421913).

The event served as a major occasion for the Sri Lankan community across the West Midlands. Alongside colourful cultural festivities, it also offered vital services, with the Sri Lankan High Commission providing on-site consular support such as passport renewals and visa assistance.
The presence of distinguished guests, including the Mayor of Walsall, the Lord Mayor of Birmingham and officials from the Sri Lankan High Commission, reflected the growing recognition of the community’s contribution to local life.
Throughout the day, attendees enjoyed traditional Sri Lankan games, lively dance performances and a variety of authentic Sri Lankan street food. The celebrations continued into the evening with a musical and cultural show that brought the event to a memorable close.

Overall, the event highlighted the strength, unity and cultural richness of the Sri Lankan community, while also building connections across the wider region.
