Local Care Champ Helena Shortlisted for National Award

A devoted Sanctuary Care home colleague from Birmingham has been shortlisted for a prestigious National Care Award.

Helena Swallow, Domestic Supervisor at the Beeches Residential Care Home in Northfield, has been named a finalist for the Sara Berrio Care Champion Award at the National Care Awards 2026.

Helena was recognised for the extraordinary support she gives to residents, families and colleagues. She acts as an advocate for residents with no family, supports people through major life changes and helps residents maintain their independence.Β

Her impact reaches every part of the home. Helena helps colleagues with training, technology and keeps relatives connected through the home’s WhatsApp group and private Facebook page.Β

Following the loss of a colleague’s son, Helena independently launched a fundraiser that raised more than Β£10,000 for the family. She has also completed additional training to strengthen the support she provides to others.

Home Manager Francesca Lisle said:

Helena is affectionately known as the "Mum of The Beeches". What stands out most is her kindness. She supports residents, families and colleagues alike, and has a natural ability to recognise when someone is struggling and offer help before they have to ask.

Residents and their families adore her and colleagues rely on her. She is at the centre of so much that happens here, and we are incredibly proud that she has received this national recognition.

Helena said:

I am completely overwhelmed and honoured to be shortlisted. The Beeches means so much to me, and I feel lucky to work with such wonderful residents, families and colleagues. This recognition is for everyone at the home because we all support one another and work together as one team.

The winners will be announced at the National Care Awards ceremony in November.
