British buyers worried that Brexit, new visa rules and changes to Spain’s property market have closed the door on moving abroad will be able to put their questions directly to legal specialists at a major Birmingham event this month.
A Place in the Sun Live returns to the NEC Birmingham from 18 to 20 September, with thousands of prospective overseas buyers expected to explore property, relocation and investment opportunities.
Among the issues likely to dominate conversations are Spanish residency rules, healthcare, driving licences, taxation, holiday rental restrictions and the recent end of Spain’s Golden Visa scheme.
Alex Radford, founding partner of My Lawyer in Spain, will speak at the event on the legal process of buying property in Spain and says confusion around recent changes has left some British buyers believing a move is no longer possible.
“There’s a lot of concern and worry about the situation post Brexit in terms of visa and residency rules, healthcare and driving licences and the tax implications of becoming a Spanish resident,” he said.
“The end of the Golden Visa, anti-tourism protests and the proposal for 100% property tax have all made people fear that they can’t move to Spain anymore, which really isn’t the case.”
He added that while British citizens now face additional requirements compared with before Brexit, buying property and relocating to Spain remain possible.
“Yes, there are more hoops to jump through since Brexit, and some new legislation in place around holiday rentals, but with the right information and support, Brits can still move here and own property here.”
Spain remains a major draw for British buyers
Interest in Spain remains strong among UK buyers despite the changing legal and political landscape, but the process can now involve more planning around residency, tax and how a property will be used.
Radford will speak during the show’s seminar programme on all three days, covering the legal steps involved in purchasing property in Spain.
My Lawyer in Spain will also be exhibiting during the event and answering questions from visitors about buying, relocating and renting out property.
